A Journey to Africa and Back
In 2010, on a solo volunteer journey, Jen Anderson traveled to the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, in Tanzania. Leaving the comforts of home behind for 28 days, her experiences in Moshi Town and Karanga Village fundamentally changed her preconceived views on international volunteering, culture sharing, and the idea of “home.”
Capturing her experiences in a journal and blog, Jen discovered the essence of what it means to find yourself alone in a strange land, and awake for the very first time.

A Note from Jen:
October, 2017 —
My heart went into writing this book, even as part of it stayed behind in Tanzania. The narrative will be far from perfect, as it can only be a temporary snapshot of one person’s experience. In spite of that limitation, I have tried to spotlight the strengths and achievements of extraordinary Tanzanians, working tirelessly to improve the lives of their neighbors; my goal was to bring attention to their work by documenting it with truth, accuracy and fairness at the forefront of my mind. To do this well required a change in focus and an extensive rewrite of the existing manuscript. I tried to bring them to life on paper, the way the things they shared with me brought me to life. My hope is that this book will spark conversation and inspiration, while honoring a community on the other side of the planet that, during my short stay, welcomed me with open arms.
